An AI camera, an AI edge box, and an AI NVR can all run local video analytics. They solve different architecture problems. The best option depends on the cameras already installed, how many streams need analysis, where recording is managed, and how the customer wants to receive alarms.

Choose an AI camera for a new or isolated point

An AI camera places image capture and inference in the same device. It is a practical choice for a new camera point, a gate, an elevator lobby, a fire lane, or an outdoor location where adding another appliance is inconvenient. The camera can keep local configuration and event records and can send structured events to a platform.

The camera must be installed for the target. A high-resolution camera does not solve a poor angle, a heavily backlit view, or a person who occupies too few pixels in the image. Review the lens, height, distance, light, and detection region before selecting the algorithms.

Choose an AI edge box to upgrade existing CCTV

An edge box is usually the first choice when a site already has IP cameras, an NVR, or a video management system. It connects to existing RTSP or ONVIF streams, performs local analysis, and leaves the original camera network in place. This approach is useful for factories, warehouses, gas stations, construction projects, industrial parks, and other sites with established CCTV coverage.

The edge box should be sized by real workload, not channel count alone. Resolution, frame rate, selected algorithms, number of simultaneous streams, stream stability, and alarm output all affect the required configuration. A short sample from the actual cameras is more useful than a generic specification comparison.

Choose an AI NVR when recording and event review belong together

An AI NVR combines recording, event evidence, and search in one local device. It is well suited to smaller multi-camera sites where the customer wants a local recorder and AI event workflow in the same appliance. Review teams can search records by event type, time, camera, and available target information.

An AI NVR is not automatically the best choice for every retrofit. A site with an existing central NVR or VMS may prefer an edge box that feeds events into its current system. A site with many channels in a server room may require a central analytics server instead.

Use the camera inventory to make the decision

Before choosing hardware, prepare a simple list of camera locations, stream protocol, resolution, frame rate, image quality, target risks, required event outputs, recording system, network topology, and platform interfaces. Then group the cameras by scenario. A gate camera, a conveyor camera, and a control-room camera rarely need the same algorithm mix or alarm rule.

Keep acceptance tied to the scene

For every selected camera, document the target, detection region, normal activity, expected abnormal event, duration, repeat-alert interval, evidence fields, and reviewer. This approach makes it easier to choose between camera, edge box, and NVR, and it makes later maintenance easier as well.
